The word vinegar has its origin in the Latin words vinum which means wine, and acre which means sour, although, later, in old French it derived to aigre which had the meaning of intense, so the meaning would be something as intense wine. The origin of vinegar is linked to that of wine a few thousand years ago, around 5000 BC, since, initially, vinegar was obtained from the alcoholic fermentation of wine.
